CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University swimming team competed in the Queens Fall Frenzy over the weekend, with the men placing fifth overall and the women in ninth overall in the event
Freshman
Agustin Orechia continued a fine start to his Gardner-Webb career in the men's 200 yard back stoke final on Sunday afternoon. Orechia touched the wall in 1:46.93 to take a spot on the podium and third place. With that pace, Orechia sent a brand new Gardner-Webb record in the event. The O Pino, Spain native also competed in the men's 100 yard back stroke championship on Saturday, placing sixth with a time of 49.68 seconds.
Freshman
Dakota Townley advanced to the finals in the women's 200 yard breast stroke on Sunday after posting a 2:18.82 time in prelims. Townley managed to improve upon her time in the finals, touching the wall in 2:18.40 for seventh place.
Junior
Justin Bender had a record setting weekend for Gardner-Webb, setting multiple school records including a 53.11 second pace in the men's 100 yard breast stroke. Bender kept right on in the championship of the men's 200 yard breast stroke, placing second with a time of 1:57.62 and just a half second short of the top spot.
Junior
Hannah Routh also made a championship appearance for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Competing in the women's 100 yard butterfly final, Routh posted a time of a 56.19 seconds to take eighth place.
Freshman
Alex Cook posted one of his best weekends in Gardner-Webb colors, wrapping up his meet at Queens with a shot at a championship in the men's 200 yard butterfly. Cook posted a 1:49.23 in prelims, just ahead of a 1:49.06 in the finals for a seventh place finish.
In Saturday finals,
Luke Weber managed a fourth place run for Gardner-Webb in the men's 4000 yard IM championship. Weber touched the wall in 3:58.91, improving on his prelim time by nearly two full seconds.
As far as team events, the Runnin' Bulldogs posted their best result of the weekend in the men's 200 yard medley relay. The quartet of Orechia, Bender,
John David Cass and
Jacob Jensen combined for a time of 1:28.59 with Jensen flying to a 19.61 second split in the final leg.
