Box Score Greenville, S.C.---- The Gardner-Webb men's tennis remains perfect early in the spring season!
After dropping the double point to Xavier Saturday afternoon, the Runnin' Bulldogs went on a roll and won four-straight singles matches to take a 4-3 victory over the Musketeers at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University.
Gardner-Webbs improved to 6-0 on the young season. Xavier, which competes in the Big East Conference, falls to 1-6.
In the double's competition, Xavier's Ryan Cahill and Pascal Mosberger knocked off Gardner-Webb's No.1 tandem of
Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) and
Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa), 6-3.
Numa Lemieux-Monette (Montreal, Canada) and freshman
Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) won 6-3 at No.2 doubles over the Musketeers Charlie Temming and Cristian Gonzalez.
The No.3 doubles match saw Xavier's Kyle Totorica and Jorge Santamaria win 6-1 over
John Spring (Miramar Beach, Fla.) and
Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany).
Xavier held a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In the singles competition, Gardner-Webb won the top four matches to rally for the win.
Once again it was Dias who turned around the 'Dawgs fortunes as he took the No.1 singles match in three sets (6-1, 5-7, 6-4) over Cahill.
Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) took the singles No.2 match 6-1, 6-4 and Lemieux-Monette continued the 'Dawgs momentum in the singles competition by taking the No.3 spot 6-2, 6-4.
The match clincher was secured in the No.4 singles spot as Niethammer prevailed 6-4, 6-1.
At singles No.5, Spring lost 6-7, 4-6 and
Chrisjan Van Wyk (2-6, 1-6) dropped the sixth and final singles match.
"That first singles match was big for us," said Gardner-Webb men's tennis coach
Mike Griffith. "It was important for us to change the momentum after Xavier won the doubles point and we did that. All six courts got early breaks in singles and we were fortunate to find a way to keep our undefeated season rolling."
