Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis Falls to Red-Hot Western Carolina 5-2

Aliz’ee Poulin and Courtney Fyvie prevail in singles matches for Runnin' Bulldogs
Boiling Springs, N.C. -- The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team returned to the Webb Tennis Center on Tuesday and fell to the red-hot Western Carolina team 5-2.
Gardner-Webb now stands at 1-2 while Western Carolina, which set a school record with its eighth-consecutive victory, improves to 8-1.
Starting the afternoon in the double's competition, Gardner-Webb's No.1 tandem of junior Emilia Roslund and sophomore Emma Shasteen lost (6-3) to the Catamounts No.1 duo of Angela Perez and Isabella Sambola.
The Runnin' Bulldogs No.2 doubles of freshman Aliz'ee Poulin ( Beauceville, Quebec, Canada) and graduate senior Courtney Fyvie (Durbam, South Africa) battled Madison Schwarz and Chloe Schwarz before falling 6-7.
In doubles No.3, senior Katie Watts (Haslet, Texas) and freshman Milica Prokic (Belgrade, Serbia) also lost in a hard-fought battle 5-7 Andrea Redondo and Jadeo Groen.
In the singles competition, Roslund, a Lund, Sweden native, lost the No.1 singles match 3-6, 2-6 to Sambola.
Sophomore Emma Shasteen - who hails from Floda, Sweeden – lost (2-6, 3-6) in the singles No.2 match.
Poulin (7-5, 1-0, WR) prevailed by opponent retirement in the No. 3 singles match for Gardner-Webb
The Dawgs Prokic lost the No.4 singles spot (2-6, 2-6) to Perez.
Fyvie (6-1, 6-7, 1-0) took the singles No.5 spot over Madison Schwarz.
Valeria Lloclla (6-7, 2-6) closed out the competition for the Dawgs with a loss in the sixth and final singles spot.
"We had a good effort against a very good team that is very well-coached," said Gardner-Webb women's tennis coach Jim Corn. "We wound up serving for the No.2 and No.3 doubles matches, which would have given is the doubles point. We are putting ourselves in a good position to win matches which is a positive. I like the progress we're making; we're getting there."
Up Next: Gardner-Webb will be in action again on Friday afternoon when the Runnin' Bulldogs visit Elon for a 2PM match. The Dawgs will also be in action at the Webb Tennis Center on Sunday when they take on Appalachian State at 1PM.
