Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis Remains Unbeaten with 4-1 Victory at ETSU

Dawgs improve tp 7-0 with first-ever victory over Buccaneers

Box Score JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The winning-streak continues for the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team!

For the first time in five all-time meetings, Gardner-Webb prevailed over East Tennessee State University as the visiting Runnin' Bulldogs secured a 4-1 victory over the Buccaneers at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex Tuesday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb improved to 7-0 on the season. ETSU, which competes in the Southern Conference, falls to 3-5.

Gardner-Webb got off to a strong start in the double's competition as the Dawgs' Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) and Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa) knocked off Milledge Cossu and Adam Nagoudi, 6-3 in the No.1 doubles match.

Numa Lemieux-Monette (Montreal, Canada) and freshman Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) won 7-5 at No.2 doubles over the ETSU tandem of Dimitri Badra.

The No.3 doubles match saw the Buccaneer's Pedro Cressoni and Alberto Garcia win 6-2 over John Spring (Miramar Beach, Fla.) and Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany).

Gardner-Webb held a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

In the singles competition, the Dawgs won the top two matches as Dias started things off winning the No.1 singles in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) over Badara.

Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) took the singles No.2 match 6-3, 6-1 over Cossu.

Lemieux-Monette competed in the No.3 spot which did not finish before the match clincher was secured in the No.4 singles spot as Niethammer prevailed 6-1, 6-3.

At singles No.5, Spring lost 2-6, 2-6 and Jurie Terblanche did not finish the sixth and final singles match.

 "This was another clutch win for us," said Gardner-Webb men's tennis coach Mike Griffith. "Winning the doubles point really helped give us the early momentum. We respect ETSU and understand that not many teams have won on their home courts over the years. This win is special!"

Up Next—Gardner -Webb will be in action again on Friday (2/16) when the Runnin' Bulldogs visit The Citadel for a 2:30 PM match start in Charleston, South Carolina. The Dawgs will also visit Georgia Southern on Sunday (2/18) for an 11AM match in Statesboro, Georgia.
