Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis Wins Program Record Eighth-Straight 6-1 at The Citadel

Runnin' Bulldogs sweep singles competition to start season 8-0 for the first time ever!

Box Score Charleston, S.C.  – The winning-streak now stands at a program-record eight in a row for the road warriors also known as the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team.

The visiting Runnin' Bulldogs secured their seventh victory away from the Webb Tennis Center as they defeated The Citadel, 6-1, at the Earle Tennis Center Friday afternoon.

Overall, Gardner-Webb improved to 8-0 for the first time in school history. The Citadel, which competes in the Southern Conference, fell to 3-7.

Gardner-Webb got off to a rocky start in the doubles competition on Friday as The Citadel took the doubles point by sweeping all three matches.

The Dawgs' Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) and Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa) were knocked by Hayden Shoemake and Sebastian Kamieniecki, 4-6 in the No.1 doubles match.

Numa Lemieux-Monette (Montreal, Canada) and freshman Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) fell 2-6 at No.2 doubles against The Citadel tandem of Ted Bagwell and Teo Cariov.

The No.3 doubles match saw the Bulldogs Noah Van Dyke and Lucas Robins win 6-4 over Gardner-Webb's Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) and Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany).

The Citadel held a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

In the singles competition, the Dawgs rallied and won all six matches as Dias started things off winning the No.1 singles (6-4, 6-2) over Shoemake.

Lepine took the singles No.2 match 7-6, 6-2 over Cariov.

Lemieux-Monette knocked off Kamieniecki in the No.3 spot in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Chrisjan Van Wyk secured the fourth match-clinching point for the Dawgs with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the sixth singles match.

Niethammer won in the No.4 singles with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Van Dyke and at singles No.5, Johan Van Wyk prevailed 6-2, 7-5 to give Gardner-Web a sweep of the singles competition.
 
"We got another win on the road, we're true road warriors," said Gardner-Webb men's tennis coach Mike Griffith, whose team is off to its best start ever. "The Citadel took it to us in doubles, but I'm really proud of the guys and how they fought back and turned around the momentum in singles."
