Box Score Boiling Springs, N.C. -- The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team returned to the Webb Tennis Center Sunday afternoon and closed out a three-match week with a 4-3 loss to a tough Appalachian State squad.

Gardner-Webb now stands at 1-4 on the season. App. State, which won its first road match and first road win under new head coach Hannah Fetters, improves to 3-2.

Starting the afternoon in the double's competition, Gardner-Webb's No.1 tandem of junior Emilia Roslund (Lund, Sweden) and sophomore Emma Shasteen (Floda, Sweeden) lost (6-3) to the Mountaineers No.1 duo of graduate student Maggie Pate and freshman Taya Powell.

The Runnin' Bulldogs No.2 doubles of freshman Aliz'ee Poulin (Beauceville, Quebec, Canada) and graduate senior Courtney Fyvie (Durbam, South Africa) fell 6-1 to the Mountaineers Savannah Dada-Mascoli, who is the reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, and Naledi Manyube.

Gardner-Webb prevailed on doubles court No.3, 6-1, as senior Katie Watts (Haslet, Texas) and freshman Milica Prokic (Belgrade, Serbia) defeated Riley Collins and Brooke Demerath.

In the singles competition, Roslund lost the No.1 singles match 3-6, 2-6 to Dada-Mascoli.

Poulin prevailed for her third singles win of the week for the 'Dawgs, handing Powell her first singles loss of the season 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (11-9) on court No.2.

On court No.3, App's Pate continued her dominance in singles play as she improved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-1 over Valeria Lloclla.

Prokic defeated Collins, 6-1, 6-2, on court No.5 for Gardner-Webb while Watts (6-0, 6-4) got the win for the 'Dawgs in singles No.6.

The match was decided as App's Manyube took singles No.4 in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 over Fyvie.

"We had a really good effort once again against a good team," said Gardner-Webb women's tennis coach Jim Corn. "We played well, but came up a point short."
