
Gardner-Webb's Johan van Wijk Named Big South Tennis Freshman of the Week

Red-Shirt Frosh instrumental in 3-0 week for the Runnin' Bulldogs
CHARLOTTE, N.C. ---- The early-season accolades keep coming in for the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team.
The Big South Conference announced this afternoon that Runnin' Bulldog red-shirt freshman Johan van Wijk has been selected as the conferences's Freshman of the Week!
The award covers matches played Monday January 29th through Sunday February 4th.
During the week, van Wijk was instrumental in the 'Dawgs posting a 3-0 mark to improve to 5-0 overall on the young season.
Last Saturday, van Wijk, a Somerset West, South Africa native, teamed with teammate Graham Bourne as the No.2 doubles team in the Runnin' Bulldogs opening match 6-1 win at Belmont Abbey.
The duo clinched the doubles point with a 5-1 victory vs Samuel McGregor and Joshua Mayhew of the Crusaders, who are the two-time Conference of the Carolinas Champions and the pre-season favorite again in 2024.
Van Wijk also won the No. 6 singles match vs Tyler Troche 7-5, 6-2, as Gardner-Webb won the nightcap 7-0 to sweep the doubleheader vs the Crusaders.
