Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis Opens Spring Season in Impressive Fashion

Junior Emilia Roslund leads Runnin' Bulldogs in 7-0 whitewashing of visiting Limestone

Box Score Boiling Springs, N.C. -- The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team opened its spring season in impressive fashion Wednesday afternoon as the Runnin' Bulldogs blanked visiting Limestone 7-0 at the Webb Tennis Center.

Gardner-Webb stands at 1-0 on the season while Limestone falls to 0-1.

Starting the afternoon in the double's competition, Gardner-Webb's No.1 tandem of junior Emilia Roslund and sophomore Emma Shasteen started things off with a 6-2 win over Limestone's Camila Molina Barranco and Maria Cecilia-Gomez.

The Runnin' Bulldogs No.2 doubles of senior Katie Watts (Haslet, Texas) and freshman Milica Prokic (Belgrade, Serbia) prevailed over the Saints tandem of Monika Temkoval and Anamaria Kiszner-Luca 7-6 (3).

The Dawgs' No.3 doubles team of freshman Aliz'ee Poulin ( Beauceville, Quebec, Canada) and graduate senior Courtney Fyvie (Durbam, South Africa) made it a clean sweep with a 6-1 victory over Anastasia Khriapko and Sara Valentini.

Gardner-Webb continued its dominance in the singles competition as the Runnin' Bulldogs swept all six matches.  

Roslund - a Lund, Sweden native - took the No.1 singles match (6-3,6-1) for the 'Dawgs over the Saints Kiszner-Luca.

Sophomore Emma Shasteen - who hails from Floda, Sweeden - dominated Limestone's Khriapko (6-0, 6-0) in the singles No.2 match.

Poulin (6-1, 6-1) prevailed in the No. 3 singles spot to clinch the match for Gardner-Webb.

The Dawgs continued rolling as Prokic captured the No.4 singles spot (6-4, 7-5) over the Saints Molina Barranco.

Fyvie (6-2, 6-2) took the singles No.5 spot and Watts completed a perfect opening day for Gardner-Webb with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the sixth and final singles spot.

"I am very proud of the girl's effort today," said Gardner-Webb women's tennis coach Jim Corn, who is in his 18th year as the head coach of the Runnin' Bulldogs women's tennis program. "It's always good to get a win in your first match of the year. Limestone is a well-coached and competitive team. It was a good test for us."

Up Next: Gardner-Webb will be in action again on Friday afternoon when the 'Dawgs visit UNC Charlotte. The first match is slated to begin at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex at
3:00 PM.
