BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University softball went 2-0 hosting the first day of the Spring in the Springs Tournament on Saturday at Brinkley Softball Stadium with a pair of come from behind wins. First to Binghamton University 3-1, then to Mercer University 2-1.
Gardner-Webb got yet another great start out of their ace
Andrea Lyon against the Bearcats tossing a complete game and eight K's with just one earned run. Binghamton earned one in the top of the first frame. This one-run lead stood until the fourth inning when
Taylor Dreher scored
Araceli Pesqueira to tie the game. The 'Dawgs got two more across in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead with
Ella Christopher tipling home Dreher, and
Annicka McLaughlin scoring her. Lyon then shut things down in the seventh for the win.
Elle Doolittle and Kaylyn Kyle continued strong pitching for GWU in the second game with Mercer similarly taking a one-run lead to open the game. The Mercer Bears did not score again as
Alyssa Bonilla as pinch hitter singled to score Christopher tying the game 1-1 in the sixth inning. The 'Dawgs displayed great discipline at the plate drawing four walks in the seventh to score
Lilly Deaton on a walk off walk with two outs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will host the second and final day of the tournament on Sunday playing Mercer for a second time at 1:00 p.m., and North Carolina A&T at 3:00 p.m.
