Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis Defeats Presbyterian 5-2

Runnin' Bulldogs continue their string of strong performances to pick up a Big South victory!

Box Score Clinton, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team continued its stretch of strong performances on Wednesday afternoon (3/20).as the Runnin' Bulldogs traveled to Clinton, S.C. and defeated Big South rival Presbyterian, 5-2, at the Templeton Tennis Courts.

Gardner-Webb, which has won four of its last six matches, improves to 5-7 overall (2-1 in the Big South).

Presbyterian drops to 8-9 (1-1 Big South).

Gardner-Webb captured the doubles point with wins at number one and two doubles.

The Runnin' Bulldogs No.2 doubles team of senior Katie Watts (Haslet, Texas) and freshman Milica Prokic (Belgrade, Serbia) won (6-2) against Lucianna Piedra and Madison Dennett.

The Dawgs No. 1 tandem of sophomore Emma Shasteen (Floda, Sweeden) and Emilia Roslund (Lund, Sweeden) also won their doubles match, 6-4, over McKenzie Davis and Delaney Mathilde.

Gardner-Webb nearly swept the doubles matches, however on Court No.3 graduate senior Courtney Fyvie (Durbam, South Africa) and freshman Alizée Poulin (Beauceville, Quebec, Canada) fell 5-7 to PC's Valentina DeSousa and Claudia Sanchez.

Gardner-Webb led 1-0 heading into the singles competition.

In the singles competition, Prokic defeated Claire Giddings (6-3, 6-1) at No.6 singles to get things rolling for the Dawgs.

Fyvie won (6-1, 6-3) over De Sousa of the Blue Hose at No.5 singles before Shasteen clinched the match for Gardner-Webb on Court No. 1 (6-3, 6-4) with a victory over Davis.

Roslund also won her singles match for the Runnin' Bulldogs in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) over Mathilde at singles No.2.

Presbyterian picked up two singles points as Watts lost to Piedra of the Blue Hose in three set (3-6, 6-3, 3-6) at No. 4 singles and Poulin fell (1-6, 2-6) to Sanchez at No.3 singles.

"This was a big conference road victory," said Gardner-Webb women's tennis coach Jim Corn. "I'm so proud of my girl's toughness today. They (team) have been working hard and it's starting to pay off. PC (Presbyterian College) is a very well-coached team that always plays hard. We are very happy to get a win there today."
