Eduardo Dias & Jurie Terblanche Once Again Sweep Big South Weekly Tennis Accolades

Dias named tennis Player of Week for fifth time; Terblanche picks up second tennis Freshman of the Week honor!

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The accolades keep piling up  for the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team during its dominating run through the 2024 spring season.

For the third time this season, the Runnin' Bulldogs swept the weekly honors awarded by the Big South Conference.

Senior Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) was selected as the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week while freshman Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) was chosen as the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week.

For Dias, it was the fifth time this spring that he has been named the conference's player of the week.

Terblanche is picking up his second tennis Freshman of the Week Award, which marks the fourth time the Dawgs have had the most outstanding freshman performer this season.

The League announced the two awards on Wednesday (3/27). The selection is for matches played March 18th through March 24th.

Last week, Gardner Webb continued its magical spring as the Runnin' Bulldogs won three matches in five days to improve to 15-3 overall. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs opened Big South Conference play last Tuesday at the Webb Tennis Center as they took care of business and defeated visiting Presbyterian, 5-2.

The Dawgs turned in another dominating performance Thursday afternoon as they defeated host Longwood, 6-1, in a Big South Conference match on the Lancer Courts.
Gardner-Webb closed out a 3-0 week with a win at UNC Greensboro (UNCG), 6-1, at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center last Saturday.
 
Dias went 6-0 overall for the week, winning ALL his singles & doubles matches.

Against Presbyterian, Dias was part of the 'Runnin' Bulldogs No.1 tandem along with senior Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa) that got things rolling in doubles with a 6-3 victory over Javier Matos and Denim Yaday.    

Dias, who improved to 15-0 in singles play, then took care of Matos on Court No.1, (7-6, 6-2) to keep rolling through his dominant spring for the Dawgs.

Against Longwood, the 'Runnin' Bulldogs No.1 tandem of Dias and Chrisjan Van Wyk started the day with a 6-1 doubles victory over the Lancers tandem of Timeo Puech and Alejandro Hernandez.

At No.1 singles, Dias took care of Puech (6-4, 7-5) to remain unbeaten in singles matches this spring.

At UNC Greensboro in the double's competition, the 'Runnin' Bulldogs No.1 tandem of s Dias and Chrisjan Van Wyk started the day with a 6-4 doubles victory over the Spartans David Flisberg and Christopher Johns.

In the singles competition, Dias continued his dominance at No.1 singles as he defeated Tymofiy Khrystyuk (6-4, 6-2) to improve to 17-0 on the season. 

Terblanche was 5-0 overall during the week, winning all three of his singles matches and going 2-0 in doubles.
 
At No.2 doubles against Presbyterian, Terblanche, and junior Lemieux-Monette (Montral, Canada) secured the doubles point for the Dawgs with a 6-2 win over Marco Foglieni and David Mamalat.

Terblanche also won in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 7-5) over Foglieni in No.6 singles.

At Longwood, Terblanche and Lemieux-Monette secured the doubles point for the Dawgs with a 6-2 win over Alejandro Uribe and Petar Belosevic at No.2 doubles.

At No.6 singles, Terblanche won in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 10-5) over the Lancers Luis Reis.

At UNC Greensboro, Terblanche picked up yet another singles match victory in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 1-0) over the Spartans Andrew Black at No.6 singles to close out an unblemished week.
