Boiling Springs, N.C.---- On senior day at the Webb Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon (3/27), the host Gardner-Webb men's tennis team knocked off Big South Conference foe Radford, 6-1. Gardner-Webb secured the doubles point with wins on all three courts to take a 1-0 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs then built their lead to 6-0 with wins on the top five courts and took the match to improve to 16-3 overall (3-0 in Big South). In the double's competition, Gardner-Webb secured the first match at No.3 doubles when the Dawgs duo of senior John Spring (Miramar Beach, Fla.) and junior Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) defeated the Highlanders. Tom Saporta and Manfredi Vergine, 6-2.     The 'Runnin' Bulldogs No.1 tandem of senior Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) and senior Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa) secured the doubles point for the hosts with a 6-3 victory over Guilherme Severin and Charles Courteau. At No.2 doubles, junior Lemieux-Monette (Montral, Canada) and freshman Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) completed the doubles sweep for the Dawgs with a 6-3 win over Robert Hagen and Filippo Marangoni. In the singles competition, Gardner-Webb won on courts two and three before clinching the match on Court No.1 when Dias, who improved to 18-0 in singles play, took care of Severin, 6-3. At No.2 singles, Lepine prevailed (6-2, 6-2) over Saporta. Lemieux-Monette won on Court No.3 (6-2, 6-2) against Hagen. On Court No.4, junior Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany) defeated Yaday (6-0, 6-1). On Court No.5, Chrisjan Van Wyk prevailed (6-3, 6-3) against Courteau. The one Radford singles point came when Terblanche lost in three sets to Evan Edwards (4-6, 6-0, 1-0) in No.6 singles. Otherwise, it was a near-perfect senior day at the Webb Tennis Center. "This group (Dias, Spring, Chrisjan Van Wyk and Cathal Butler) of guys are awesome," said Gardner-Webb head tennis coach Mike Griffith, whose senior class captured its 52nd career match vs Radford and is still counting. I am so glad we won on their senior day " Up Next— Gardner-Webb will continue conference play a week from Friday (4/05) when the Dawgs visit Asheville for a 3 PM match.
