Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis Defeats Fairfield 6-1

Runnin' Bulldogs sweep singles competiton to pick up victory

Box Score Boiling Springs, N.C. -- The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team returned to the Webb Tennis Center Monday afternoon and defeated visiting Fairfield, 6-1.

Gardner-Webb improves to 2-5 while Fairfield, which competes in the Metro Atlantic Conference, falls to 1-4.

Starting the afternoon in the double's competition, graduate senior Courtney Fyvie (Durbam, South Africa) and freshman Aliz'ee Poulin (Beauceville, Quebec, Canada) started the afternoon with a win (6-1) on Court No.3 to Laina Campos and Lucie Tuttle.

Fairfield then took the next two doubles matches as Gardner-Webb's No.1 tandem of junior Emilia Roslund (Lund, Sweden) and sophomore Emma Shasteen (Floda, Sweeden) lost (3-6) to the tandem of Sarah Liu and Maeve Cassidy.

The Runnin' Bulldogs No.2 doubles team of senior Katie Watts (Haslet, Texas) and freshman Milica Prokic (Belgrade, Serbia) fell 4-6 to the Stags Katarina Plumtree and Nicolette Loeffler.

Fairfield led 1-0 heading into the singles competition where the Runnin' Bulldogs got on a roll.

On Court No.3. Poulin (6-2, 6-1) prevailed over Loeffler.

Fyvie won on Court No.4 over Loeffler 6-2, 6-1.

Roslund clinched the match for the Dawgs on Court No. 2 with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Plumtree.

Prokic defeated the Stags Lily Malinowski 6-3, 6-3, on court No.5 while Shasteen took care of business in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 vs Liu on Court No.1.  

Watts won in three sets 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8, over Cassidy on Court No.6. to round a perfect singles competition for Gardner-Webb.

"We lost the doubles point, but then won all the singles matches" said Gardner-Webb women's tennis coach Jim Corn. "It was a great effort and win over a well-coached team. The final score doesn't indicate how close the match was. I am proud of all my girls' competitiveness today. They all really went after it today."

Up Next — Gardner-Webb will be in action again on Thursday (3/7) when Asheville visits Webb Tennis Center to open Big South Conference play at 2PM. The Runnin' Bulldogs then visit Belmont Abbey on Friday (3/8).
