SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb University softball team earned a split against the University of South Carolina Upstate on Saturday afternoon wining the first game 4-3 before dropping the second 5-0. The first game was a continuation of a game on Friday that was postponed in the second inning due to weather.
On Friday evening, GWU took an initial lead with an
Andrea Lyon single bringing home one, and a another from
Adrienne Visintine that scored a pair. The Runnin' Bulldogs entered Saturday holding a 3-0 lead when the game continued. In the fifth inning,
Ella Christopher hit a sac fly that brought home Visintine. The Spartans ended up scoring three in the fifth inning but it was not enough to catch the 'Dawgs. The game ended 4-3.
Game two saw USC Upstate take control via small ball and they did not look back. The tallied one in the second, third and fourth innings before hanging two more in the fifth. The Spartans hung on to earn the 5-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb will return to the field to complete their series with USC Upstate on Monday, April 22 on the road at a time to be determined.
