Cinderella Run Ends for Gardner-Webb Men's Golf in Big South Golf Championship

Runnin' Bulldogs lose 4-1 to Winthrop in Championship Match on Sunday

FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. The Gardner-Webb men's golf team saw its Cinderella run in the Big South Conference Men's Championship Tournament come to an end on Sunday afternoon.

After upsetting No.1-seed High Point (3-1-1) in the semifinals of Match Play earlier in the day, the No.4-seed Runnin' Bulldogs lost a hard-fought battle to No.2-seed Winthrop (4-1) in the Championship Match that included two weather delays that lasted 96 minutes during the afternoon final. . 

The four-day event (Thursday 4/18 thru Sunday 4/21) was played on the Par 71-6526 yards course at the Ocean Creek Golf Course in Fripp Island, South Carolina.

Graduate senior Max White (Tampa, Fla) was the top performer for Gardner-Webb on Sunday as he won the Dawgs' only point in a 19-hole battle with Winthrop's No.1 golfer Mason Tucker during the Championship Match.

White also prevailed (5&4) over High Point's top golfer Miller Carr in the semi-finals.

Sophomore Jack Boyer (Greensboro, N.C.), who defeated High Point's Charlie Barr (5&3) from the No.4 spot in the semi-finals, moved to the No.2 spot against Winthrop and lost (4&3) to the Eagles Logan Lutz in the finals.

The Runnin' Bulldogs Jules Bondil (Pertuis, France) lost a tough championship match (2&1) to Ashton Eubanks. The Gardner-Webb senior also lost (5&4) to High Point's Grady Newton in the semifinals.

Sophomore Bradley Davis Jr (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) fell (5&4) to Winthrop's Austin Mosher in the Championship Match after prevailing (1UP) over High Point's Fred Roberts IV earlier in the day.

Rounding out the Gardner-Webb competitors was graduate senior Carter Rains (Greenville, N.C.) who lost (2&3) to Winthrop's Nick Mayfield after tying High Point's Gregor Meyer.

Gardner-Webb was the No.7-seed and posted a team aggregate score of 8-under par 276 for a two-shot lead after the first round of stroke play on Thursday.

The Runnin' Bulldogs tied Radford for third place at 847 for the final two spots into the Match Play round.

This concludes the 2024 spring golf season for Gardner-Webb.
