Gutty-Gritty Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis Outlasts Visiting Jax State 4-3

Runnin' Bulldogs prevail in four-plus hour match to improve to 18-3!

Boiling Springs, N.C. (April 7, 2024) ---- In a marathon match that lasted over four hours, the gutty-gritty Gardner-Webb men's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory over a game Jacksonville State squad at the Webb Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

The Runnin' Bulldogs, who captured their first-ever outright Big South Conference regular-season championship on Friday, have now won six consecutive matches and stand at 18-3 on the season.

Jax State, which hails from Jacksonville, Alabama, falls to 15-8 overall. The Gamecocks are a first-year member of Conference USA.

Jax State started the match off by claiming the doubles point, however, Gardner-Webb would not be denied in singles.

In the double's competition, Gardner-Webb secured the first match as the 'Runnin' Bulldogs No.1 tandem of senior Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) and senior Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa) defeated the Gamecocks duo of Marko Milosavljevic and Zach Murphy, 6-4.

At No.3 doubles, the Dawgs pairing of senior John Spring (Miramar Beach, Fla.) and junior Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) fell 2-6 to Lucius Soller and Vanja Dobrnjac.

Gardner-Webb's No.2 doubles team of junior Lemieux-Monette (Montral, Canada) and freshman Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) battled Liam Day and Logan Haga, who claimed a close 5-7 triumph to give Jax State the early, 1-0, lead.

In the singles competition, the Runnin' Bulldogs turned the momentum around as they won on courts one and six to take a 2-1 advantage.

On Court No.1, Dias took care of Dobrnjac 6-0, 6-2 to improve to 19-1 in singles play on the season.

Terblanche won (6-3, 6-3) over Soller in No.6 singles.

On Court No.4, junior Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany) lost (4-6, 2-6) to the Gamecocks Mate Palcau to give the visitors their first singles point of the day and even the match at 2-2.

On Court No.5, the Dawgs Chrisjan Van Wyk fell to Day in three sets by scores of 6-2, 5-7, and 6-4 to give Jax State a 3-2 lead.

Lemieux-Monette kept the match alive for the Runnin' Bulldogs  with a gutty win on Court No.3 (2-6, 7-6, 7-6 ) over Milosavljevic, in a tight match that was determined with a pair of tiebreakers in sets two and three.

At No.2 singles, Lepine prevailed in another close match over Alin Fatu by the scores of 4-6, 6-4, and 5-7 to clinch the match victory for Gardner-Webb.

"This was an amazing college tennis match," said Gardner-Webb head tennis coach Mike Griffith. "Both teams battled for four-plus hours. We found a way to run down one extra ball and that made the difference in getting the win."

Up Next— Gardner-Webb will be in action on Friday (4/12) when the Dawgs visit nationally-ranked Wake Forest for a 7:30 PM match in Winston-Salem.
