Four Runnin' Bulldogs Capture Big South Confernce Championshps; 24 garner All-Conference Honors!
LEXINGTON, KY. – The Gardner-Webb Track & Field squad is running in the right direction!
Under the tutelage of first-year head coach Greg Thiel, the Runnin' Bulldogs turned in a slew of impressive performances this past year and have begun to rewrite the school's record book.
All told, Gardner-Webb had four performers win Big South Conference Track and Field Championships during the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field seasons.
A total of 24 Runnin' Bulldogs turned in performances that earned them spots on the Big South All-Conference Team in their respective Indoor or Outdoor event.
During the Indoor Track and Field season, the Runnin' Bulldogs set five new school records in men's and women's events while turning in a total of 37 Top 10 All-Time program performances, including 17 that landed in the Top Three.
Among the highlights of the Men's Indoor Season for Gardner-Webb was the performance of sophomore Quentin Peterson, who was crowned Big South Conference Champion in the Men's Weight Throw (17.85m, (58-06.75).
Peterson also picked up Big South All-Conference honors in the Men's Shot Put with a throw of 17.42m, (57-02.00) which was good for second place.
Senior Noah Meadows captured a Big South Conference Title for the Dawgs in the Men's Long Jump as he cleared 7.09m (23-03.25) to take the top spot in the conference.
Rounding out the quartet of Men's Indoor Track and Field All-Conference Performers for Gardner-Webb was sophomore TJ Peebles who turned in an 8.17 in the Men's 60 METER HURDLES to finish second in the conference.
In addition to the four All-Conference selections for the Runnin' Bulldogs, freshman Nathan Cremin was a huge bright spot as a set school records in the Men's 600 Meter and 800 Meter Run during the Indoor Season. He was also part of the Men's 4x800 relay team with sophomore Ryan Morita, junior Mark Mellon and freshman Kaden Pratt that turned in a new school mark in the event.
Cremin would continue his brilliance for the Dawgs during the Outdoor Track and Field Season as he was crowned Big South Champion in the Men's 800 Meter Run with a time of 1:51.54.
Peebles would also repeat as a Big South All-Conference Performer during the Outdoor Track and Field Season as he finished second in the Men's 400 Meter Hurdlers in 52.96.
Junior Jacoby Johnson was named Big South All-Conference for the Runnin' Bulldogs in both the Men's Shot Put (15.60m, (51-02.25) and Men's Discus (48.58m, (159-04) as he placed third in both events.
Peterson also continued his sensational season in the spring for the Dawgs as he garnered three Big South All-Conference Selections with second place finishes in the Men's Shot Put (17.86m, (58-07.25), Men's Discus (48.58m (159-04) and the Men's Hammer Throw (57.86m, (189-10).
Overall, Peterson was named the Big South Conference's Men's Most Valuable Athlete based on the highest accumulated point total of 24 points.
The Gardner-Webb super-soph represented the Runnin' Bulldogs at the East First Round Championships Competition which was hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.
Competing in the Men's Shot Put, Peterson (17.74m/58-21⁄2) finished 31st. against a field of competitors which included 22 athletes from Power Five programs. He also competed in the Men's Discus Throw but finished 48th as he fouled during all three of his throws in the competition.
Peterson set new school marks in both events during the Outdoor Season as Gardner-Webb turned in 35 performances that landed on the program's Top 10 list, including 10 that were in the Top Three.
On the lady's side, Gardner-Webb was equally impressive during the Indoor and Outdoor seasons.
Freshman Teandra Clemons, 11.86m (38-11.00) was crowned Big South Conference Champion in the Women's Triple Jump for Gardner-Webb during the Indoor Season.
Clemons also repeated as a Big South All-Conference performer in the event during the Outdoor Season as she took second place, 12.03m (39-05.75) in the Women's Triple Jump during the spring.
Freshman Anna Spencer took home Big South All-Conference honors in two events for the Runnin' Bulldogs during the Indoor Season as she finished second in the Women's 60 Meter Dash (7.64) and placed third in the Women's 200 Meter Dash (24.79).
Spencer also set a new school record in the Women's 300 Meter Dash during the indoor campaign.
In addition to Spencer, sophomore Jessica Perriello also set a school record in the Women's 600 Meter Dash during the Indoor Season.
Senior Alyiah Eugene took second place in the Women's High Jump (1.58m, (5-02.25) to snag Big South All-Conference honors while Graduate Student Karmen Taylor, who placed third in the Women's Weight Throw (16.71m (54-10.00), also took home Big South All-Conference.
The final Big South All-Conference recipient of the Indoor Season for Gardner-Webb was freshman Isa van Sintemaartensdijk, who placed third in the Women's Pentathlon (3,330).
van Sintemaartensdijk also picked up Big South All-Conference honors during the Outdoor Season in the Women's Javelin as she placed third with a throw of 42.28m (138-08) and set a new school record in event during the spring.
Sophomore Madison Boyd was a Big South All-Conference selection during the Outdoor Season for the Runnin' Bulldogs as she placed third in the Women's Hammer Throw with a 54.22m (177-11).
The 4x100 METER WOMEN'S RELAY TEAM of junior Deborah Marlow, Clemons, sophomore Jada Pittman and Spencer were named Big South All-Conference for their second-place finish in 46.48.
"It has been an exciting first year with plenty of challenges along the way," said Thiel. "When it mattered, however, this team showed up and saved their best performances at the championship meets. We appreciate how the team bought in to the changes."
