Gardner-Webb raced out to a commanding 8-1 lead in set one while maintaining at least a three-point lead throughout en route to a 25-18 win and 1-0 match lead.
After a 3-3 tie to start set two, back-to-back attack errors followed by a kill from
Samia Sayd gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 6-3 lead. That advantage ballooned to 11-5, but Lamar battled back to a 16-all even frame. However, a crucial 4-1 run by GWU seized control of the set as the Runnin' Bulldogs took a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Lamar came back in set three with a 25-21 set win, forcing a pivotal fourth frame. In that fourth set, Gardner-Webb jumped out 6-2 and never looked back, finishing off Lamar with a final set win of 25-15.
"I'm so proud of the way our team played today", said head coach Alex Hinsey, who picked up his first career win at Gardner-Webb. "Improving all weekend long to get today's win. It took a team effort and we were able to put forth a very balanced offensive effort."
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday, September 3, traveling to face the Phoenix of Elon. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
