Box Score DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team fell 2-0 at Davidson on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. The Wildcats posted a single goal in each half to secure the win.
Davidson started the game as the aggressor after a series of shots in the 11
th minute of action, but fortunately enough all strikes missed the mark while leaving the contest scoreless early on.
However, the persistence paid off for the Wildcats in the 36
th minute as Sophia Whiddon snuck a ball past the GWU keeper into the back of the net for the game's first score. The Runnin' Bulldogs were presented a great chance at the 41:43 mark of the period, but
Anya Tribune had her shot pulled in by the Davidson netminder.
Trailing by the single goal to begin the second frame, Gardner-Webb began to apply more pressure to the Wildcats defense, putting shots on goal in the half's initial 15 minutes. Those missed opportunities proved costly for GWU as Davidson extened the lead to two goals in the 61
st minute.
From that point, the game was all academic as Davidson was able to milk the remainder of the clock while taking home the 2-0 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to the pitch on Thursday, September 5, traveling to Cullowhee, N.C. to face the Catamounts of Western Carolina University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
