'Dawgs Score Twice in Each Half, Beat SC State at Home

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team scored twice in each half against South Carolina State on Thursday evening, rolling to a 4-0 victory at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

The goals came early and often for GWU on a balmy night at Greene-Harbison Stadium, where the Runnin' Bulldogs needed less than four minutes to find the back of the net. After graduate midfield Ayse Demirci shot a long distance effort off the crossbar, freshman defender Anya Tribune was there for the rebound. Tribune only had to push the ball over the line from short distance to put Gardner-Webb up 1-nil.

The second goal came on the stroke of halftime, a key time for the Runnin' Bulldogs to double the advantage. Junior defender Camila Lezcano found a cross from graduate forward Abby Clark, heading Gardner-Webb into a 2-nil lead in the 40th minute.

It didn't take long for Lezcano to complete her brace, as the junior was right place, right time in the 55th minute, getting on the end of a pass from Demirci who added her second assist of the night as well. That effort saw the Runnin' Bulldogs effectively put the game away, now leading 3-nil.

Senior forward Carina Leal added another goal for GWU in the 66th minute, finding a cross on the back post that originally came from Tribune and senior forward Livi Tanzer. After a VAR call from the referee stood, the Runnin' Bulldogs could celebrate a 4-nil lead.

From there, the Red and Black were under no pressure defensively and rode out a 4-nil win. The Gardner-Webb defensive unit held South Carolina State to just three total shots for the game, with only one of them reaching sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Liu.

GWU returns to action on Wednesday, September 25th against Radford, the opening game of Big South play.
