RICHMOND, VA - The Gardner-Webb University wrestling team battled back from a big early deficit to take a late lead on Friday night, but were unable to see out a comeback victory in a 22-20 loss to VMI

On the road in SoCon action, the Runnin' Bulldogs quickly fell in an 18-4 hole. However, GWU climbed back into the match behind the nationally ranked duo of Todd Carter and T.K. Davis. Carter, ranked No. 20 at 141 pounds in last week's NCAA Coaches Rankings, defeated Phoenix Alyea by a 14-5 major decision. Davis meanwhile, ranked No. 24 in the same poll at 133 pounds, picked up a 6-4 decision over Dyson Dunham. Heading into the final bout at 149, the Runnin' Bulldogs held clinging to a two point lead, but a major decision went the way of VMI as the Black and Red fell 22-20.

Gardner-Webb returns home on February 4th and 7th, hosting two SoCon match-ups within a week. The 'Dawgs host Appalachian State on Tuesday night, and Presbyterian on Friday night, both beginning at 7 p.m.
