Runnin' Bulldogs Battle to Nil-Nil Draw With Winthrop

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team (2-7-2, 1-1-1 Big South) created multiple late chances on Wednesday night at Greene-Harbison Stadium, before eventually settling for a nil-nil draw with visiting Winthrop (2-5-4, 0-2-1 Big South)

It was a game of few chances, with Gardner-Webb finishing with just a 5-4 edge in shots on goal, a 4-3 edge on corner kicks. The Runnin' Bulldogs improved from the first half to the second, out-shooting Winthrop 11-3 after halftime overall, but GWU would be unable to find a winner.

Gardner-Webb produced its best chance of the opening 45 minutes about mid-way through, when graduate forward Annie Slovak slipped through the defense around the far side. A shot on the near post led to an awkward save from the Winthrop keeper. Slovak had a similarly good move in the 38th minute, also turned away to the bottom left.

In the second half, Gardner-Webb nearly found a winner on a couple different occasions, but would be turned aside by some last-ditch Winthrop defending. In the 49th minute, both senior defender Camila Lezcano and freshman midfielder Eleni Lagusis had shots blocked from close range after a corner. Lezcano produced the best chance from either team in the 86th minute, forcing a sprawling save by the Eagles' Mia Vrataric.

A late chance from senior midfielder Peyton Bryant nearly brought the crowd to its feet and the Gardner-Webb bench out on to the pitch, with an 86th minute shot from some 40 yards out nearly finding the upper corner.

LEADERS
Senior goalkeeper Savannah Dixon was mostly unchallenged in net, but was called upon to make four saves as she kept her second clean sheet of the season, and second in a row in Big South play. Slovak finished with two shots on goal, three total shots in 50 minutes, Lagusis had two in 28 minutes, and Lezcano had two in 78 minutes played. Freshman midfielder Bailey Pottratz also completed the first 90 minute game of her Gardner-Webb career.
