Women's Soccer Visits UNC Asheville For Crucial Big South Contest

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team (3-7-2, 2-1-1 Big South) will aim to make it three straight wins and four games in a row unbeaten in Big South play on Wednesday night, when the Runnin' Bulldogs visit UNC Asheville (5-6-2, 1-2-1 Big South) for a crucial mid-week contest

  • The Runnin' Bulldogs are fresh off a 1-0 win at home over Charleston Southern on Saturday
  • Gardner-Webb has seven points through its first four league games, following the aforementioned win over Charleston Southern, a win over Presbyterian and a draw against Winthrop
  • Sophomore forward Anya Tribune is the active Big South Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the winning goal for GWU against Charleston Southern, a 72nd minute goal for her first of the season and third of her Gardner-Webb career
  • Graduate forward Annie Slovak scored a 79th minute winner against Presbyterian for her first Gardner-Webb goal, and is expected to make her 72nd collegiate appearance between GWU and Liberty on Wednesday night 
  • In addition to Slovak who has played 30 minutes off the bench in every appearance this season, GWU is expected to feature in rotation, junior midfielder Lily Stegall and senior midfielder Kaitlyn Huff who have each played over 400 minutes
  • GWU is led by redshirt junior midfielder Peyton Bryant, who holds a team-high 1023 minutes for outfield players this season and is the only GWU outfield player above the 1000 minute mark
  • Senior goalkeeper Savannah Dixon is the active Big South Defensive Player of the Week, having started every game in goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs, totaling 1051 minutes, 66 saves, and three straight shutouts
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs shutout streak, with Dixon in goal for it's entirety, stretches back 298 minutes all the way to the second half of Gardner-Webb's conference opener at Longwood
  • Gardner-Webb has also seen significant defensive contributions from freshman defender Sarah Birchall, who has started each of the Dawgs last seven games in a row and has averaged over 65 minutes per game during that span

  • On Senior Day, senior defender Camila Lezcano started her 56th consecutive game for Gardner-Webb, a streak that began at Winthrop in early October of 2022 and has extended in full across the 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons
  • Joining Lezcano, Allred, Bryant and Dixon, sophomore defender Tanner Michael has started in all 12 games this season, playing 989 minutes and recording an assist against SC State
UNC ASHEVILLE NOTES
  • The Bulldogs have improved from 2024 to 2025, finishing 4-12-1 overall last season, sitting now at 5-6-2
  • UNC Asheville has been particularly good on the road, where the Bulldogs have scored three of its five wins
  • In Big South play, UNC Asheville scored its lone win over Winthrop, held Presbyterian to a draw on the road, but suffered home defeats to Radford and Charleston Southern
  • The Bulldogs attack has some significant depth of note, with 17 goals spread between 10 different scorers this season
  • UNC Asheville holds the best goals against record in the Big South, having conceded just 10 times in its 13 games, an average of less than once per game
  • Bulldogs goalkeeper Gracie Murray has the best goals against average in the league as an individual, at just .909
  • Murray trails only Dixon in the Big South in saves per game, with Dixon holding a mark of 5.50 and Murray at an even 5.00
