CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team turned in a strong overall performance at the Queens University Fall Classic on October 3-4. In total, the Runnin' Bulldogs compiled a 17-1 record in singles play over the two-day event. Participating teams included host Queens, UNC Asheville, and Wingate.
"There were two things that stood out this weekend," said head coach Mike Griffith. "Going 17-1 in singles action is cool while the overall results show we have the team to compete for another conference championship in 2026. I've never coached a team that did not win the fall and won in the spring, so winning is very important. Second, our conditioning was outstanding. We never retired in the match after a long weekend. We are a tough team and always fight until the end. This is our personality and what we are known for, and I can't wait to see we do at Regionals."
Gardner-Webb opened play on Friday afternoon with doubles matches against Wingate and Queens. The Runnin'. Bulldogs picked up a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs, but fell to the Royals, 3-0.
The Dawgs finished off the Friday portion of the schedule with a resounding 6-0 singles victory over conference foe UNC Asheville.
Saturday began with a doubles match against Asheville, in which GWU tallied a 2-1 record. The Runnin' Bulldogs closed out the tournament with an 11-1 record in singles, taking down Queens 6-0 before dismissing Wingate 5-1.
Sophomore Boyd Schreiber stood out over the weekend after going 2-1 in doubles play and 2-0 in singles while playing at top position in doubles and No. 2 singles. Sophomore Alexandre Bergeron also turned in a solid outing after going undefeated in singles action, playing at No. 1 for the Dawgs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on October 16-20, participating in the ITA Regionals hosted by Duke University.
