GARDNER-WEBB NOTES
  • Gardner-Webb has begun a new era under head coach Terri Williams, a 30-year veteran with 17 years of experience as a Division I coach. Williams was previously with the likes of Auburn and Georgetown, and with a stop back at her alma mater Penn State as the associate head coach, where Williams played from 1988 to 1991
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs have opened the 2025-26 season with four consecutive road games at Queens, West Georgia, Mercer and finally at Virginia Tech on Thursday night
  • Finally back inside Paul Porter Arena, Gardner-Webb enters Sunday afternoon's game having won four of its last five games and five of its last seven home games overall
  • Gardner-Webb returns five players for 2025-26, including redshirt sophomore guard Kayla Martin, junior guard Amina Gray, senior guard Nyla Walker, sophomore forward Regina Yanez-Enriquez and former Big South Conference Freshman of The Year, junior guard Anaya Harris
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs welcome seven newcomers for the 2025-26 season, including five freshman and two transfers. The transfers are redshirt senior guard Jaelyn Acker arriving from Furman, and junior forward Amira Ofunniyin who lands in Boiling Springs from Maryland Eastern Shore
  • Walker is the leading returner for Gardner-Webb among nearly every statistical category from a season ago, playing in 28 games, starting five of them, and averaging 4.2 points per game during the 2024-25 campaign. She exploded for a career-high 23 at West Georgia on Saturday, being nominated for Big South Player of The Week
  • Walker has also been the Runnin' Bulldogs most consistent player when it comes to free throws, knocking down 18-of-24 to begin the year, taking nearly a third of the team's free throw attempts
  • Acker has started the 2025-26 season as one of GWU's strongest offensive players, shooting 45% from three with at least one three pointer made in each game. The Richfield, Wis. native tied a season-high with 11 at Virginia Tech on 4-of-5 shooting
  • Mostly the defensive end, Ofunniyin has been the Runnin' Bulldogs strongest player in the rebound column with 31 to this point in the season, over 7.8 per game. The Raleigh, N.C. had a to-date season-high 10 at Virginia Tech
  • Among a deep freshman class, freshman guard Makayla Legette has played the biggest minutes, averaging 30.0 per game through four games and to a tune of 8.8 points per game, a mark that is second highest on the team
  • Of the nine players in the Gardner-Webb rotation so far, all nine average north of 11 minutes per game, with seven playing an average of over 20 minutes per night
