Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Matthew Farris, Assistant AD of Strategic Communication

Late Comeback Falls Short at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Sophomore guard Jacob Hudson finished with a career-high 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting, but it was not enough as the Gardner-Webb (0-4) men's basketball team dropped a 95-84 contest at Elon (3-1) on Saturday evening.

After a cold shooting first half, the Runnin' Bulldogs picked up the pace in the second, knocking down 21-of-38 shots from the field (55%), including 7-for-14 from three (50%). Joining Hudson with double figures was freshman guard Jamias Ferere, who chipped in 13 while Jacob Hogarth added his first double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 12 boards.

After splitting the initial 10 points, Elon took control of the first half with a 15-4 run while building a 20-9 lead following a Ned Hull three-pointer. Gardner-Webb scored four straight, but it would be the Phoenix who continued to grow the lead, doubling up the Dawgs, 34-17, with 7:04 on the clock.

The advantage ballooned to its biggest of the game, 63-34, early in the second half before an Ace Talbert layup sparked a 16-2 by the Runnin' Bulldogs, trimming the deficit to 65-50 with less than 12 to play.

However, Elon ran the score back out to a 20-point lead down the stretch. Gardner-Webb made one final push, closing the gap to single digits at 93-84 following a layup by Hudson, but that would be as close as the score would get as the Phoenix picked up the 95-84 win.

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to the court on Tuesday, November 18, traveling to Chicago, Ill. for a matchup with DePaul. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
