BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb (1-12) men's basketball team dropped an 83-57 contest versus visiting Wofford (7-4) on Monday evening inside Paul Porter Arena. The Terriers used a strong second half to take the non-conference win.
Sophomores Jacob Hudson and Jacob Hogarth each posted a team-high 13 points while Hogarth led the Runnin' Bulldogs with five boards. Sophomore guard Colin Hawkins added eight points and a pair of assists.
The Runnin' Bulldogs finished the game with a 40% shooting clip after knocking down 20-of-50 shots, including 2-for-15 from distance. GWU turned the Terriers over 11 times, marking the eighth game this season the Dawgs have forced their opponent into double-digit miscues.
Junior guard Curtis Williams III scored the first two points of the game before Ace Talbert buried a shot from distance followed by a smooth jumper in the paint by Hogarth, giving Gardner-Webb an early 7-2 lead. However, 10 in row from the Terriers gave Wofford a lead it would not relinquish.
The score was pushed out to double digits on a series of occasions in the opening 20 before a layup by WC's Nils Machowski ballooned the advantage to 34-20 with 1:32 remaining on the first half clock. Gardner-Webb closed the period with seven straight, but trailed at the break, 34-27.
A 20-10 run by Wofford over the initial nine minutes of the second pushed the visitors ahead 54-37. From that point, the lead extended to as many as the final score of 83-57.
Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Thursday, December 18, playing host to Toccoa Falls in an Education Game special at Paul Porter Arena. Tipoff is slated for 11 a.m.
