ATLANTA, Ga. – The Gardner-Webb (7-1) men's tennis team picked up a hard-fought 4-3 come-from-behind win at Georgia State on Friday, February 14.
Georgia State opened the match with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take a quick 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point. No. 3 doubles was played out as
Alex Lepine and
Alexandre Bergeron captured a 7-5 win over McKane Johnson and Baran Soyler.
The Runnin' Bulldogs quickly knotted the contest at 1-all after
Boyd Schreiber took down Brian Capalnean in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) at No. 6 singles.
Eduardo Dias put the 'Dawgs ahead with a strong performance at No. 1 singles, defeating Baran Soyler. That advantage extended to 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-4 win for
Kim Niethammer over Aryan Jit Singh at No. 3.
Alex Lepine secured the win for Gardner-Webb, taking down Gabriele Datei in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 6-2) at No. 5 singles. Georgia State took No. 4 and 2 singles, but it was too little, too late as GWU ran its win streak to seven straight.
"We beat a very strong and tough Georgia State team, who will be a force in the Sun Belt Conference," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "I thought the turning point was Eduardo (Dias) coming back from down 0-3 in the first set of his singles flight to take the match."
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday, February 16, traveling to Greenville, S.C. and Furman University.
