Men's Tennis Continues to Roll With 4-3 Win at Furman

| By:
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Freshman Boyd Schreiber picked up a win at No. 6 singles while clinching a 4-3 win for the Gardner-Webb (8-1) men's tennis team over Furman (2-4) on Sunday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center.

After dropping the doubles point, the Runnin' Bulldogs came back to take four-of-six singles match for their 8th consecutive win after falling in the season-opener.

Although GWU ultimately fell behind 1-0 following doubles action, the team of senior Eduardo Dias and Schreiber were able to take down Matt Kandel Elijah Poritzky 6-2 in No. 1 doubles, continuing their impressive start to the season.

Freshman Alexandre Bergeron helped the 'Dawgs even the match at 1-1 following his 6-4, 6-3 win over Nicolas Dispas at No. 4 singles. Senior Kim Niethammer followed that up with a straight-set (6-1, 7-5) victory at No. 3 singles against John Rado, pushing Gardner-Webb ahead 2-1.

Dias put together an impressive performance at No. 1 singles. After falling down a set and then 4-1 in set two, Dias came back strong to pick up a 7-5 (7-4) win in the second before capping the three-set thriller with a dominant 6-1 win, putting the Runnin' Bulldogs on the verge of yet another win.

Furman made things interesting with a win at No. 2 singles, but Schreiber put a stop to the comeback attempt with his 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Connor Laymon at No. 6. The Paladins took the final singles point, but it proved to be too late as GWU walked away with the 4-3 victory.

"Wow! What a battle today," said head coach Mike Griffith. "Furman came out ready to play. However, we stepped up and away with another win."

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, February 18, playing host to East Tennessee State. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
