WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb (10-2) men's tennis team saw its 10-match win streak come to an end at the hands of No.1 nationally-ranked Wake Forest (16-0) on Tuesday evening at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
The Demon Deacons picked up wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles to earn the match's first point. That lead doubled after Wake took No. 3 singles, but GWU's Kim Niethammer put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win over Charlie Robertson in No. 2 singles action.
However, Wake Forest moved to within a single point of the overall win following a victory at No.5. Ioannis Xilas sealed the win for the Deacs in the No. 1 singles match. Freshman Boyd Schreiber earned the second point for Gardner-Webb after a hard-fought win over Cornelius Shalmi at No. 6 singles.
"Doubles were a disappointing effort tonight, but we showed a lot better in singles," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We recognized some things we can improve on, and we will."
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Saturday, March 1, playing host to Campbell at 11 a.m.
