BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Graduate
Eduardo Dias continued his stellar start to the season, picking up a straight-set win over Tymofiy Khrystyuk in No. 1 singles while clinching a 6-1 win for the Gardner-Webb (3-1) men's tennis team over visiting UNC Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon.
It would be the Spartans who took the early lead on the scoreboard after taking two-of-three in doubles action. Dias and freshman
Boyd Schreiber took down Khrystyuk and Luke Thomson, 6-3, in No. 1 doubles, but UNCG earned wins at No. 2 and 3 for the doubles point.
However, that would be the only advantage the Spartans held on the afternoon as the 'Dawgs dominated singles play, winning all six matches.
Senior
Kim Niethammer started the scoring for GWU with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Thomson before freshman
Alexandre Bergeron gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the lead for good with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory against Andrew Black at No. 4 singles.
Senior
Numa Lemieux-Monette put the home team on the brink of a win after taking down John Gabelic 7-5, 6-1 in No. 2 singles before Dias secured the win at No. 1. For good measure, Schreiber picked up a 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 win at No. 6 singles while senior
Alex Lepine closed out the day with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 win at No. 5.
"Credit UNCG as they were more aggressive and made fewer errors in doubles," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "In singles, we were able to turn the momentum and it carried us to victory."
Gardner-Webb will make the quick turnaround and return to the courts on Wednesday, February 6, playing host to Belmont Abbey. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
