BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Freshman Alexandre Bergeron defeated Alejandro Uribe 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles while clinching a 7-0 win for Gardner-Webb (15-3, 2-0) men's tennis over visiting Longwood (3-5, 0-1) on Friday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex.
Gardner-Webb dominated No.2 and 3 doubles to secure the match's first point. Senior Numa Lemieux-Monette and freshman Kaua Cressoni took down Petter Lindquist and Petar Belosevic 6-2 at No. 2 before Alex Lepine and Johan Van Wijk cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3, taking down Uribe and Marko Mrdak.
Singles competition belonged to Gardner-Webb as freshman Boyd Schreiber won in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) over Lindquist, putting the 'Dawgs up 2-0 followed by a dominant performance at No.1 with graduate Eduardo Dias picking up a 6-2, 6-3 win against Timeo Puech while moving GWU one point away from a win.
Bergeron took care of business at No. 4, helping the Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 2-0 in conference play. Although the match was in hand, the two teams finished the final three singles matches with senior Kim Niethammer, Lemieux-Monette, and Lepine all taking wins in singles action.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to the courts on Monday, March 17, traveling to take on the Phoenix of Elon. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
