Late Game Two Rally Comes Up Short as Runnin' Bulldogs Drop Big South Doubleheader to Radford

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University softball team (15-15, 0-3 Big South) saw a late rally come up just short in the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon, as the 'Dawgs dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Radford (15-16, 3-0 Big South) in the opening series of conference play

GAME ONE - Radford 5, Gardner-Webb 0
In the early game, the visiting Highlanders added a run in each the first, second, and third innings, pulling away to hand the Runnin' Bulldogs a defeat.

Gardner-Webb wasn't without its chances to cut into the Radford lead, stranding six runners in total including a runner on second in the third and fifth innings. Freshman shortstop Raigan Kelly helped provide an offensive spark in that fifth, singling to left center as part of a 1-for-3 game at the plate.

Pulling away in the late innings, Radford scored in the fifth and seventh to finish with five runs on nine hits. Gardner-Webb meanwhile collected two hits for the contest.

Junior pitcher Alli Stidham handled the majority of work in the circle for GWU, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs.

GAME TWO - Radford 2, Gardner-Webb 1
Offense was at a premium in the late game, with no runs scored until the seventh inning of the contest.

Freshman pitcher Anna Hornbaker got the start for GWU, largely cruising through 5.1 innings while allowing no runs and just four hits.

Locked in a 0-0 tie in the top of the seventh, Radford quickly took the lead for the first time. The Highlanders got an RBI double down the right field line to score the first run of the game, then an RBI single into the gap to go ahead 2-0.

Gardner-Webb didn't go quietly into the bottom of the seventh however, eventually putting the tying run at third with two outs, following back to back doubles from graduate student Araceli Pesqueira and sophomore Carmen McRae that made the score 2-1. A strikeout ended the threat not long after, as GWU fell by that score.

The Runnin' Bulldogs finished with one run on five hits, with senior catcher Jailyn Tineo finishing the contest 2-for-3 with a walk.
