BURLINGTON, N.C. – Stepping out of conference play, the Gardner-Webb (15-4) men's tennis team saw its four-match win streak come to an end at the hands of Elon (4-6) as the Phoenix were able to pick up a 5-2 win on Monday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
"We were not good enough today, but credit Elon for jumping out on us and never letting us in the match," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We will use this match for motivation and be ready for Davidson on Senior Day."
Elon started strong with a win at No.3 doubles, but the team of Eduardo Dias and Boyd Schreiber came back with a victory over Veljko Krstic and Oskar Antinheimo at No.1, making the No.2 single flight the deciding factor. The Phoenix took that flight 6-2 while also earning the first point of the match.
That lead quickly ballooned to 3-0 after Elon tallied wins at No. 6 and 4 singles, but Dias put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. However, the Phoenix put the match away after taking No. 3. GWU's Alex Lepine tallied the only other point for the 'Dawgs, earning a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No.5 over Charles Pilet.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Sunday, March 23, playing host to the Wildcats of Davidson College. First serve is set to go over the net at 2 p.m.
