BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University softball team (10-9) closed out its Spring in The Springs Tournament on Sunday afternoon against Chattanooga (13-7), falling 6-0 after the visitors plated four late runs to pull away
The Runnin' Bulldogs and Mocs went door to door for the second day in a row, largely locked in a pitcher's duel for the game's first three innings. The two sides combined for just two hits through the opening three frames, both by way of Chattanooga in the top half of the third. Despite the Mocs putting runners on second base in both the first and second innings, freshman pitcher
Hannah Frye was able to work around the Chattanooga lineup and keep a zero on the board.
Chattanooga did strike for two in the fourth however, taking a 2-0 lead. The Mocs scored the first run of the game on a ground-out to second base, before adding another on a single through the left side a few moments later. The damage was limited to just two runs after a fielder's choice third out, despite Chattanooga sending seven batters to the plate.
Gardner-Webb collected its first hit in the bottom of the fourth. Junior second baseman
Annicka McLaughlin dropped down a surprise bunt, then beat the throw to first base with ease to give GWU a shot at creating some offense with just one out.
In the top of the seventh, Chattanooga added four runs, all unearned to pull away for a 6-0 lead. A fielding error in center allowed the first run to score just after two ground-outs to begin the frame, then the Mocs used a couple of singles to open the contest up. Gardner-Webb went quietly in the bottom of the seventh as the game finished 6-0.
For Gardner-Webb, Frye tossed 6.2 innings in the circle, allowing six hits, two earned runs, and striking out a pair. McLaughlin added the only hit for the GWU offense, while graduate third baseman
Araceli Pesqueira and freshman center fielder
Lauren Spainhower walked once each.
