COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb University track and field teams were back in action at the Weems Baskin Invitational at the University of South Carolina on Saturday, with a new school record in men's javelin part of the highlights for the Runnin' Bulldogs
Leading off, senior
Calvin Fernandez set a new Gardner-Webb record and took first place in men's javelin, Fernandez posted an outstanding 68.48 meters, winning the meet by nearly 3.5 meters and writing his name into the GWU record books all at once.
The Runnin' Bulldogs also had a solid afternoon in the women's 400 meter dash. Senior
Alena Ivanov was among the top finishers, scoring a fourth place run with a time of 57.85 seconds. Freshman
Gabrielle Comery also competed in the event, finishing 12th with a time of 1:00.71
Over in the women's 5000 meter run, freshman Megan Devanny placed inside the top ten for GWU. Devanny crossed the line in 19:24, good for a ninth place finish. Freshman Brooke Hope was in the same event, scoring in 12th with a time of 20:26
The women's 4x400 relay was also strong for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The team of Ivanov, Smith, Comery and senior
Teryn Bour posted a very solid fifth place run, crossing the finish line after 3:58.25
Gardner-Webb scored high marks in the women's long jump through sophomore
Teandra Clemons. Clemons, fresh off a top-level performance at the Big South Indoor Championships, finished fifth place with a distance of 5.50 meters
Senior Adironna Coleman put together one of the best performances of the day for Gardner-Webb, competing in the women's shot put. Coleman placed second by just .01 meters, putting a distance of 12.68 meters on the board. Coleman also competed in the women's discuss throw, placing fourth with 40.35 meters. Junior
Madison Boyd was sixth with 39.12 meters and sophomore
Zoie Johnson was seventh with 38,93 meters in discuss throw as well.
Johnson wasn't finished there, with the sophomore winning the women's hammer throw. Johnson and teammate Boyd went 1-2, with Johnson taking the victory with 49.34 meters while Boyd was in second with 49.27 meters. Senior
Selah Holcombe also finished fourth for GWU by way of 43.49 meters.
Sophomore
Nathan Cremin continued an incredible run of recent individual results in the men's 800 meter run. Cremin finished a solid sixth overall, clocking a time of 1:56.28
Field events proved to be a strong area for the Runnin' Bulldogs on Saturday, and freshman Johsua Powell was no exception. Powell was fifth in men's long jump, putting a distance on the board of 7.05 meters. GWU teammate senior
Noah Meadows was 12th in the event with 6.61 meters.
The duo of sophomore
Devin Redd and freshman Magnum Chestnut went sixth and eighth in the men's discuss throw. Redd placed sixth by way of 43.54 meters, with Chestnut in eighth with a distance of 42.03 meters
Lastly, freshman
Jonathan Garrett and sophomore Madison Breeland competed for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the men's hammer throw. Garrett placed fifth with a distance of 47.90 meters, while Breeland also continued a good overall day for GWU in sixth, recording 46.88 meters.
