CLINTON, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb University softball team used a complete game gem from freshman pitcher
Hannah Frye and backed up her performance with four late runs, defeating Presbyterian 5-1 on Sunday afternoon and completing a weekend sweep.
Frye was excellent in the circle for Gardner-Webb, helping the Runnin' Bulldogs to victory. The Kingsport, Tenn. native went the distance with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing only four hits, one run, and striking out three.
At the plate, GWU got on the board early, but it was the fifth and seventh innings making much of the difference in the final score. In the top of the second, junior second baseman
Annicka McLaughlin beat out an infield single, allowing junior designated player
Alli Stidham to score from third. Stidham continued an excellent individual weekend later on, driving in the 'Dawgs third run via sac fly in the fifth, and fifth runs on a two-RBI single in the seventh.
Sophomore left fielder
Trina Van Dyke also came up big for the Runnin' Bulldogs, lining a fifth inning triple into the right field corner, and eventually scoring on the aforementioned sac fly by Stidham in the fifth. Through six and a half, Gardner-Webb held down a 5-0 lead.
Frye allowed two of her four hits and her only run in the bottom of the seventh, but was able to induce back to back ground-outs to finish the game, as the 'Dawgs held on to record a 5-1 victory and a three-game weekend sweep on the road.
In total, four Runnin' Bulldogs tallied a multi-hit game, including Stidham, Van Dyke, McLaughlin, and senior right fielder
Jailyn Tineo. Junior shortstop
Ella Christopher, freshman center fielder
Lauren Spainhower and junior third baseman
Alyssa Bonilla also added a hit each among 11 as a team.
