CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's golf team wrapped up the Tar Hell Intercollegiate with a 9th place finish on Sunday, April 13. Over the three-round event, the Runnin' Bulldogs posted a team score of 865 (+25).
After firing identical scores of 290 (+10) over the first two rounds, Gardner-Webb turned in its best performance of the tournament with a 5-over, 285 over the third and final round. Host North Carolina picked up the team win with an 839 (-1) while the Tar Heels David Ford captured individual medalist honors with a 54-hole combined score of 203 (-7).
Sophomore Jack Mikesell led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs after carding a total score of 209 (-1). Mikesell fired an opening round score of 71 (+1) before collecting a pair of 1-under, 69s in rounds two and three for a top 5 finish.
Freshman Reed Burton tallied a 29th place finish with scores of 72 (+2), 73 (+3), and 71 (+1) while junior teammate Jack Boyer came in 42nd after carding a three-day total of 218 (+8). Rounding out the Gardner-Webb five were graduate Mark Chandler and sophomore Pattrasuth Boonthumrongkit who fired combined totals of 225 (+15) and 230 (+20).
The Runnin' Bulldogs will now turn their attention to the Big South Conference Men's Golf Championship on April 20-23 in Fripp Island, S.C.
