Runnin' Bulldogs Cruise Into Finals With 4-1 Win Over Presbyterian

| By:

LEXINGTON, S.C. - Graduate Eduardo Dias picked up a decisive 6-3, 6-0 straight-set win in No. 1 singles while clinching a dominant 4-1 win for the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team over Presbyterian during semifinal action of the Big South Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday afternoon at the Lexington County Tennis Complex.

The Blue Hose looked poised to push the No. 1 seed Runnin' Bulldogs to the limit, taking two out of three doubles to earn the match's first point.

However, singles action belonged solely to Gardner-Webb as the 'Dawgs made quick work of PC after taking four consecutive matches, cruising into the finals.

Freshman Alexandre Bergeron put GWU on the board, taking down Evgenios Vasilakis 6-2, 6-0 in No. 4 before newcomer Boyd Schreiber took No. 6 singles by the final of 6-1, 6-1 against Denim Yadav, pushing the lead to 2-1 for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Senior Numa Lemieux-Monette put the top-ranked 'Dawgs on the brink of victory with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-2 win during No. 3 singles action over Daksh Prasad. Dias, the Big South Player of the Year, put any doubt of a PC comeback to rest with a straight set win at No. 1. After falling behind 2-0 in set one, Dias took six of the next seven points for a 6-3 win before dominating 6-0 in set two for the win.

"I felt Presbyterian was much improved since the first time we played them", said head coach Mike Griffith. "Much credit to them for gaining the doubles point. We were able to find our groove in singles and it will be nice to play for a championship tomorrow."

Gardner-Webb now advances to the Big South Men's Tennis Championship Match and will play the winner of No. 2 UNC Asheville and No. 3 Longwood tomorrow afternoon starting at 3 p.m.
