LEXINGTON, S.C. – Senior Emilia Roslund took down Alexis Nyborg in a thrilling three-set match at No.1 singles (5-7, 7-6, 6-2) while giving the Gardner-Webb women's tennis team an incredible 4-3 win over No. 2 seed UNC Asheville during semifinal action of the Big South Women's Tennis Championship on Friday afternoon at the Lexington County Tennis Complex.
After falling behind 1-0 in the match, Roslund battled back to take set two before cruising in the clinching frame for the upset win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs started fast, taking the doubles point after Greta Murzsa and Alizée Poulin doubled up Louise Booker and Avery Sager, 6-3, before clinching doubles with an identical 6-3 score as Arili Boshoff and Roslund took down Angelina Joy Hug and Elizabeth Tindera.
Boshoff put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead 2-1 with a straight-set win (6-3, 6-3) over Keira Stewart in No. 5 singles, but Asheville came back with three in a row during No. 6, 3, and 2, putting themselves on the brink of a win.
However, Natalie Crawford kept the 'Dawgs alive with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Booker at No. 4 singles before Roslund sent Gardner-Webb and its fans into pandemonium with an incredible come-from-behind victory at No. 1.
Gardner-Webb will now advance to the Big South Women's Tennis Tournament Championship, facing off against No. 1 seed Charleston Southern at noon. Follow along with all the action at www.gwusports.com.
