BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Fresh off its first-ever Big South Tournament Championship, the Gardner-Webb (20-4) men's tennis team took down visiting Wingate (17-3) by the final of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex.
"Wingate really pushed us today, but that is to be expected from a nationally ranked team," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We were able to learn what we need in order to be better and it is great to be able to grow following a win."
The Bulldogs of Wingate jumped out to an early 1-0 match lead after taking No. 1 and 3 doubles, but just as they have done all year, Gardner-Webb dominated singles action, winning five of six.
Eduardo Dias took care of Gabriel Constantino at No. 1 by scores of 6-2, 6-2 before Kim Niethammer earned a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over Carlo Rosellini in No. 2 action. No. 3 singles belonged to the Runnin' Bulldogs as Numa Lemieux-Monette made quick work of Florian Walcher, 6-3, 6-0.
Alexandre Bergeron kept the pace with a 7-6 (1-0), 6-2 victory on the No. 4 court. Wingate picked up its lone singles win at No. 5, but Boyd Schreiber closed the day out with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Gardner-Webb will now await its fate in the 2025 NCAA Men's Tennis National Championship as the selection show will air on Monday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. on ncaa.com.
