Runnin' Bulldogs Impress During Opening Day of Big South Outdoor Championships

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University track and field team were among the most impressive sides at the opening day of the 2025 Big South Outdoor Championships, with the Runnin' Bulldogs taking home an individual title in men's hammer throw and several podium finishes

Junior Quentin Peterson was the star man on Monday for the Runnin' Bulldogs, with the Big South Indoor champion also adding Big South Outdoor champion to his name for men's hammer throw. Peterson was terrific, posting a distance of 62.50 meters which not only set a personal record, but ranks as one of the 50 best in the D1 east region this outdoor season as the McDonough, Ga. native took home first place.

Women's hammer throw belonged to junior Madison Boyd, as she led a series of strong Gardner-Webb finishes in the event. The Tampa, Fla. native medaled with a second place finish behind a distance of 54.11 meters. Also in the finals for GWU were sophomore Zoie Johnson who was scored sixth (47.24 meters) and senior Selah Holcombe in eighth (46.05 meters)

Also on the podium for Gardner-Webb was senior Noah Meadows who took home third in the men's long jump. Meadows posted a school best 6.94 meters on his way to a strong finish. Freshman Joshua Powell (6.84 meters) and sophomore Jonathan Timpson (6.81 meters) 

In the women's long jump, sophomore Teandra Clemons continued a great individual season for the 'Dawgs by taking second place. Clemons lands on the podium by posting a distance of 5.89 meters. Just behind for GWU was junior Jada Pittman, who takes home third with a distance of 5.82 meters to complete the second and third finish by the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Among the strong performances was sophomore Isa van Sintemaartensdijk, who competed in the women's heptathlon. The Soesterberg, Netherlands native set a school best in the 100 meter hurdles and took first place with a time of 15.35 seconds, she was then second in the 200 meters in 26.38 seconds, second in high jump with 1.50 meters recorded, before wrapping up the day with first in the shot put, behind a distance of 10.65 meters. With three events remaining over the duration of the conference championship meet, van Sintemaartensdijk leads the overall heptathlon score.

After a successful first day which sees the Gardner-Webb men second overall and the GWU women in third, the Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday morning for day two. All the action is streaming live on ESPN Plus.
