| By:
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - After a wildly successful outdoor season and Big South Outdoor Championships, junior Quentin Peterson and graduate student Calvin Fernandez will represent Gardner-Webb at the 2025 NCAA Division I East Region Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.

After becoming the first athlete in Big South history to win all three events in a single championship meet, Peterson will take part in shot put, hammer throw and discuss at the regional championships. Peterson smashed multiple meet records in Asheville during the weekend, including 62.50 meters in hammer throw, 58.06 meters in discuss and 18.82 meters in shot put on his way to capturing three outdoor conference titles. The McDonough, Ga. native will arrive in Jacksonville with some of the best marks in the region among mid-major athletes, including No. 10 on the outdoor list for discuss and No. 19 for shot put.

Fernandez impressed at the Big South Outdoor Championships to earn a spot at the East Regional meet. The Charlotte, N.C. native put down a distance of 61.61 meters in javelin throw in Asheville, good enough for a third place finish and a place on the conference podium. Fernandez has impressed in the event all outdoor season, also setting a season-best and school record number at the Weems-Baskin Invitational in March, where he recorded a distance of 68.48 meters. He'll arrive in Jacksonville No. 18 on the event list.

The 2025 NCAA Division I East Region Championships are set to begin on May 28th, hosted by the University of North Florida and will continue through May 31st, streaming live on ESPN Plus.
