BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team led early in its home opener on Thursday night at Greene-Harbison Stadium but a late Terriers goal completed the comeback as Gardner-Webb fell 2-1
The Runnin' Bulldogs largely dominated the chances on Thursday night, holding a 25-13 edge in total shots and a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. The early pressure paid off in a big way in the 14th minute, when freshman defender
Noor Reslan caught a bit of fortune to hand Gardner-Webb the lead. Reslan drove the ball in towards junior forward
Olivia Tribolet in the box but some miscommunication at the back for Wofford allowed the ball to roll all the way beyond the Terriers keeper and across the line for a 1-0 score.
That held until the 33rd minute when Wofford found its equalizer. The Terriers swung a ball towards the penalty area off a corner kick and of all players to jump, Wofford won the ball off the head of Julia Grier to tie the game at 1-1. Gardner-Webb and Wofford each traded a couple more chances in the first half before entering the break at 1-1.
Gardner-Webb wasted no time in the second half with senior
Camila Lezcano producing one of the games best chances in the 47th minute. Lezcano swung and struck from the edge of the area, leading Wofford goalkeeper Elizabeth Navola to to have to make the best of her nine saves.
In the 72nd minute, Wofford took the lead for the first time and for good. With just enough space, Charlotte Simas of Wofford bent a shot towards the far corner, finding twine and reversing the score for a 2-1 Wofford lead. Despite almost exclusively Gardner-Webb pressure for the final 20 minutes, it wouldn't be enough as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell 2-1.
