Men's Tennis Dominates First Tournament of the Fall

| By:

BELMONT, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team kicked off the fall portion of its schedule with the Labor Day Tournament hosted by Belmont Abbey College. Over the two-day event, the Runnin' Bulldogs posted an overall record of 15-5, including a 5-0 win against Lander and 4-1 wins over Belmont Abbey and Averett.

"Pretty good start to the season", said head coach Mike Griffith. " However, I felt we made too many errors at critical times, so we have to improve on that going into our next tournament at UNCG on Sept 19th."

Friday afternoon saw the Dawgs take care of Lander with a 5-0 win as the team of Boyd Schreiber and Noah Zeiger won at No. 1 doubles 7-6 before the Runnin' Bulldogs captured the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 by Billy Mac Clement and Nicholas Reis.

Singles action were in favor of Gardner-Webb after Alexandre Bergeron and Graham Bourne won in straight sets. Kaua Cressoni aided the victory with a three-set win.

Against Averett, Cressoni and Reis teamed up to take the No. 1 singles win before a win at No. 2 by Bourne and Bergeron put the Dawgs ahead 1-0. Schreiber and Zeiger also picked up wins in singles action.

Day two began with Gardner-Webb facing North Georgia. Gardner-Webb took both doubles points, but it would be UNG excelling in singles action with the 3-2 win.

The final match of the day saw GWU take care of the host Crusaders, 4-1. After Belmont Abbey took the first doubles point, Reis and Zeiger came back strong to even things with a No. 2 doubles win. Singles belonged to the Runnin' Bulldogs as Bergeron, Zeiger, and Schreiber each won in straight sets.

Gardner-Webb will return to the courts on September 19-21, traveling to take part in the UNC Greensboro Fall Tournament.
