GREENEVILLE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's golf team concluded the ECU Ironwood Intercollegiate with a top 5 finish after carding a three-day team total of 857 (-7). The Runnin' Bulldogs fired an opening round of 292 (+4) before turning in their best round with a 7-under, 281 over the second 18. A third-round score of 284 (-4) concluded the tournament for GWU.
Sophomore Reed Burton continues to impress as he led the Dawgs over 54 holes after turning in a combined total of 212 (-4), his best performance of the year. After shooting even-par in the opening round, Burton blazed the course with a career-low 66 (-6) on day two, including four birdies and an eagle. He concluded his run with a 74 (+2) and an 11th place finish.
Senior Jack Boyer picked up the pace after an opening round score of 76 (+4), carding under-par rounds of 69 (-3) and 70 (-2) over the final 36 holes, respectively. Boyer finished his tournament with 11 birdies, including five in the second round. His stellar play over the final two rounds improved his position by six spots, earning a 21st place finish.
Junior Pattrasuth Boonthumrongkit equaled Boyer with a total score of 215 (-1), firing a 2-under, 70 in the second round of play. Boonthumrongkit also concluded his tournament with 11 birdies, five of which came over the second 18.
Freshman Jude Carper and senior Bradley Davis Jr. carded combined totals of 218 (+2) and 225 (+9), respectively, to round of the top five for Gardner-Webb. Carper turned in a pair of 1-under, 71s with a 76 (+4) in round two while Davis shook off two over-par rounds with a final round of 71 (-1).
Host East Carolina took home the team title after a 54-hole combined score of 841 (-23), besting second place UCF by eight strokes. ECU's Philip Bondestad earned medalist honors following a 3-day total of 205 (-11). Jax State's Ryley Heath finished runner-up with a 54-hole total of 207 (-9).
Gardner-Webb returns to action on October 13-14, traveling to Burlington, N.C. to take part in the Elon Phoenix Invitational.
