CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team battled back from a halftime deficit on Thursday afternoon at The Citadel, but were unable to fully complete the second half comeback in a 2-1 road defeatĀ
The Runnin' Bulldogs started well off the back of their first win of the season on Sunday, controlling the pace of play and the chances through the first 20 or 25 minutes at The Citadel on Thursday. Gardner-Webb managed nine shots in the first half but only landed one on target.
With GWU unable to convert, the home side eventually found time and space with the ball, and took the leading with a curling effort into the Runnin' Bulldogs net. After 29 minutes, The Citadel led Gardner-Webb by a 1-0 score.
Gardner-Webb came back on to the field with some energy in the second half, and that paid dividens in the 53rd minute. Freshman forward
Ila Allred pounced on a chance inside the box after a shot from fellow freshman
Bailey Pottratz was spilled by The Citadel goalkeeper, tying the game at 1-1.
It would be short-lived however as The Citadel answered to take the lead back just 53 seconds later. A good free kick into the box wasn't dealt with and eventually scrambled over the line, putting the Runnin' Bulldogs behind again, 2-1.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to show some life even after going behind again, most notably through graduate forward
Annie Slovak who came within a whisper of scoring on two occasions late, but GWU was unable to find a late equalizer in a 2-1 defeat.
