BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb (2-18, 0-5) men's basketball was defeated by visiting Presbyterian (10-10, 3-2) by the final of 92-55 on Saturday afternoon inside Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were led in scoring by freshman Spence Sims, who poured in 10 points after missing the previous contest. Sophomore Colin Hawkins added nine points and four assists while DJ Jefferson pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
As a team, Gardner-Webb shot 36.7% (18-49) from the field, including 31.8% (7-22) from distance. The Dawgs connected on 12-of-20 free throws during the game. Presbyterian finished the contest shooting 58.3% (35-60) from the floor and 41.7% (5-12) from distance. The Blue Hose outrebounded Gardner-Webb by a total of 37-25.
Presbyterian scored 11 of the first 12 points of the game before Hogarth connected on a soft hook shot in the lane for the Runnin' Bulldogs first made field goal at the 13:55 mark of the opening period.
However, PC scored the next 10 points while racing out to a commanding 21-3 lead, an advantage it would not relinquish. Curtis Williams III connected on a triple from the wing before a free throw from Hawkins and driving layup by Jacob Hudson gave the Dawgs a 6-0 scoring spurt, their best of the game. The remainder of the half belonged to Presbyterian as the Blue Hose took a 40-21 lead into the halftime break.
Gardner-Webb was able to trade baskets with the visitors the majority of the second half, but Presbyterian pulled away late in the period, leading by as many as 39 (92-53) en route to the 92-55 win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, January 21, traveling to Farmville, Va. to take on the Lancers of Longwood University in Big South action. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
