| By:

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Redshirt junior Johan Van Wijk earned a tough three-set win versus Campbell's Aleksandar Hudjec on court four while leading the Gardner-Webb (1-0) men's tennis team to a 5-2 win over the Fighting Camels on Monday afternoon at the James Nisbet Tennis Center.

"What a great day and very good team win to start the season," said head coach Mike Griffith. "It was also very nice to see former GWU President Dr. William Downs and his wife in attendance for the match today."

The Runnin' Bulldogs got out to a 3-0 match lead after earning the doubles point before collecting wins on courts three and five of singles.

Boyd Schreiber teamed up with Kaua Cressoni to win 6-0 at No.1 doubles before the point-clinching win by Alexandre Bergeron and Van Wijk (6-2) at No. 2 put the Dawgs ahead 1-0.

Cressoni then made quick work of Thomas Drapeau (6-3, 6-4) while newcomer Noah Zeiger took down Matias Lofink by scores of 7-6 (5), 6-0, leaving Gardner-Webb one point away from a match win.

Campbell fought back to make things interesting with wins at No.1 and No. 2 singles, but Van Wijk slammed the door on a comeback with his win over Hudjec. Junior Graham Bourne also picked up a victory on court six after defeating Ethan Richardson by set scores of 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to the courts on Saturday, January 24, traveling to take on Liberty in non-conference action. First serve is slated for 9 a.m.
