FARMVILLE, Va. – The Gardner-Webb (2-19, 0-6) men's basketball team suffered a 91-56 loss at the hands of Longwood (11-10, 0-3) on Wednesday evening inside Joan Perry Brock Center.
Sophomore guard Colin Hawkins led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 14 points while junior DJ Jefferson chipped in 10. Sophomore Jacob Hogarth flirted with his fifth double-double of the season after finishing with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Jacob Hudson ended the night with six points, four steals, and three assists.
As a team, Gardner-Webb shot 38.6% from the field, knocking down 22-of-57 shots from the field, including 5-for-19 from distance and 7-of-12 from the charity stripe. The Dawgs lost the rebounding battle by a tally of 41-29.
Jefferson knocked down a three-pointer 60 seconds into the contest, giving Gardner-Webb its only lead of the game. However, Longwood's Elijah Tucker put the Lancers back in front for good on the next possession.
Longwood built as many as a 19-point lead in the opening half (32-13), but the Runnin' Bulldogs ripped off seven in a row, fueled by six points from Hudson while trimming the deficit to 32-20. The Lancers outscored GWU 10-4 down the stretch and took a 42-24 lead into halftime.
Hawkins opened the scoring in the second half for the Dawgs with one of his two three-pointers, but Longwood continued to score on the offensive side of the ball. Tucker connected on a layup while putting the Lancers up by a score of 54-34 and the count would not dip below 20 points the remainder of the contest as Longwood walked away with a 91-56 win.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Friday, January 23 as it plays host to the Spartans of USC Upstate inside Paul Porter Arena. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but because of impending inclement weather the game was moved up.
